If you have a clear and defined reason for losing weight it will help you to stay on track and achieve your goal. You may have more than one reason. Make sure to write them down.

Try to read through them daily and use them as a reminder when tempted to stray from your weight loss plans.

Your reasons could include preventing diabetes, keeping up with grandchildren, looking your best for an event, improving your self-confidence or fitting into a certain pair of jeans.

Many people start losing weight because their doctor suggested it, but research shows that people are more successful if their weight loss motivation comes from within. Improving health is one of the more common reasons that people have for wanting to lose weight but they have to really own that goal and take responsibility for it rather than thinking of it as an external thing.

Another way to keep reminding yourself is with a picture - maybe it's a picture of a wedding dress or of your children playing in the park. A visual image can be a powerful reminder of your goal.
